The subtext of “Kitchen Nightmares” is that ordinary middle-class business owners need brash and brilliant moguls to save them from a sad reliance on their own mediocrity. Ramsay plays therapist, life coach and ogre here, getting the owner (also named Peter) to take down an apathetic chef who defends his filthy kitchen on the grounds that he is “just not a throwaway person.” Ramsay meets more resistance, but easily overrides it, enforcing a top-down management system on a wimpy owner who blames an unsupportive father for his lack of leadership. Ramsay makes over the kitchen at the Babylon restaurant, the customers come and Peter is instantly re-engaged, dreaming, we imagine, of his new future as a muscle-car facsimile of Rachael Ray.Īt Seascape, in Islip, Mr. The fantasy of “Kitchen Nightmares” is that losers, when presented with the right kind of motivation - when confronted with greatness - can quickly acquire the ambition that attends it. Peter doesn’t seem to care that his restaurant isn’t making money, that his crab cakes apparently taste like chairs. The eponymous Peter is a big clown of a guy who bleaches his teeth, squanders his money and seems to operate in an uninterrupted state of remorse over never having achieved his calling as an extra in “Goodfellas.” Peter’s, a family-run Italian restaurant in Babylon, is a mess because no one gets along. Everyone around him just looks so shabby, seems to be so shabby. Ramsay emerges as though he were Gwyneth Paltrow making an inspirational visit to a fat camp. Ramsay landed on the South Shore of Long Island and decided that he liked the split-levels - tonight’s episode and another one in two weeks have him focusing his attentions on restaurants in Babylon, N.Y., and neighboring Islip. ![]() The truth is, underneath all the superfluous (and the many brilliant) advances in the game, FM’s nigh-on slavish realism when it comes to depicting the challenges faced by a proper manager is knitted into the fabric of every release. The former is removed in favour of retro text commentary and the latter is pared down to a manageable size that will still throw up some names that will be new to even the most nerdy of football geeks. Trinkets of later development faffing such as the 2D match engine and an almost ludicrous, exponential extension of the player database – which now tips the 300,000 mark (how long before my brother’s five-a-side team’s in there?) – are compromised. In truth, the technical limitations FM is straining under means the series has regressed to an era in which the game was far simpler, more crude, but in some ways more ‘pure’ and fun. Strangely enough, those players will also find themselves surprisingly at ease with a game that ‘pays homage’ to earlier SI offerings – or so says development honcho Miles Jacobson in part 2 of our exclusive interview (hunt it out – it’s definitely worth a view). Those who haven’t touched SI’s games since the Championship Manager 2 era won’t even notice them. Similarly, not being able to skip loading screens will only get the goat of highly strung coaches who can’t wait a few seconds for such intermissions. Scrolling a signing-on fee offer clause to £0 takes too long, for example, but that only matters if you’re a tightwad with principles about such issues (like us). Other minor gripes will not deter every budding boss. Weighting up players against your own is a case of crudely eyeing them in the player search list or relying on your memory. ![]() While the user interface has been improved in line with the advancement in SI’s other version of the game, it’s still galling to note that there’s no player comparison tool, either. There’s still no ‘offer to clubs’ option to help you take a more proactive approach to chipping away at your wage budget, for instance. Managerial tools experienced PC bosses take for granted are noticeable by their absence. But why haven’t team talks been included? Surely such a basic interactive option would be a must-run feature? The game’s shortcomings certainly don’t end there, with a few reminders of the previous FM handheld’s irritations turning up like a nasty hangover the night after a cup win. Chatting with any player in the football universe to help prompt a move is hardly the most crucial aspect to miss either. Not even the most demandingly bratty of football fans would expect the latest FM’s interactivity options to make it into the handheld game in all their glory. Football Manager new Interactivity options Which, ironically, isn’t a wholly bad thing. The result? A game that looks decidedly antiquated next to the PC FMs. This time round, the same tech limitation-driven process of slicing down the key features of FM 2007 means you feel you’re not only getting a diet version of the latest game, but a cutdown 2007 grafted onto an already skinny 2006. Nor did the absence of detailed finance sheets and a bag full of subtle features. Heck, who could expect the glorious detail and unrivalled depth of a game that has taxed many a half-decent PC to port in fully-featured form to Sony’s black beauty, anyway? Even stripping out the 2D match engine – which actually provided a welcome reminder that life before semi-decent visuals was little worse than what we have now – didn’t bother us. The original FM for PSP was so welcome to those of us who dreamed of playing SI’s unsurpassed masterpiece on the move – without lugging a glorified typewriter around – that we forgave its shortcomings. Read full review The only current situation that allows that is to write your own campaign, form the ground up, with schedualed invasions from set points, which kind of unfairly taints your designs because you know the threats.Įdit as of the 1.3 update they have included the ability to spawn armies to assail your freebuild. I would really like to see a free build with a fight button that would spawn armies to assail your designs to test their effectivness. The only real downside to it was a lack of freebuild scenerios with the ability to fig ht your design built in. If you are in the market for a castle building Sim, I know of no other that will fill the void like this game. The campaign is much tougher than the previous versions, primarily due to new content, such as siege engines. I can forgive some laziness when it comes to the assault armies based on the level of detail given to the spawned characters from the buildings. The overall graphics were fair, but the castle building portion was excellent, i found the wall construction pliable and forgiving, with building integration to walls a definite plus. With the limited number of Castle building Sims avialable, This game stands head and shoulders above the rest, and it competes primarily with it's predicessors. If you need to haul stone you won't be able to do this. You also might want to place them around their towers because after a while they will tear them down leaving openings. However, I have found that some of the lord's will send men out to destroy your oxen, if they do this they will be able to leave. If you put the oxen (used to carry stone to your stockpile) in the openings to your enemies castle and put them to sleep the enemy will not leave the castle, thus letting you just go on about your business and them not attacking. Also to anyone that has the original stronghold if you haven't gotten thru the game here's some advice. I do advise that you have a faster processor on your computer and plenty of memory because it plays kind of slow on mine because of this. This one has video's of the enemies and allies conversing as well like when you complete a level or objective. I also like that in the campaign there is actually a storyline with this one rather than just traveling along a map like in the original. ![]() In this you can also purchase a stone triple wall, rather than having to put layers after layers (saves a lot of time). In siege equipment, there is the original equipment that was in the first one, battering rams, siege towers, catapults, trebuchets, etc., but in this one there are extras, such as the burning cart (you purchase these and two siege engineers will roll them to the spot commanded and you hit target and the will release the cart burning into the enemies structures, thus setting them on fire). There is also a Lady's Bedchamber (purchase one of these and in a few months your lord will get married). Take for instance in castle structures, the burning logs (with these you hang them over the side of the castle wall and when the moment is right you click them and click release, this sends a bundle of burning logs down onto the enemy standing below), the stone tippers (similar to the burning logs except it's large stones instead), rock throwers (these are very handy because you can put them up on your wall and just put the peasants up there that you purchase fro m the barracks for cheap, they are not great warriors but with a rock in there hand they are very effective). But some of the great things that I like about the game is the added extras that you can purchase. They say that it is 3D but it really is not that much different than the first. In essence it is, but I must say it is not what I thought it would be. I bought this game because I had heard that it was much better than the first. |
